The purpose of this study is to examine the changes in North Korea’s nationalist discourse between 2000 and 2019 to establish the relationship between the ‘Our nation-first’ principle, ‘Joseon nation-first’ principle, ‘Kim Jong Il patriotism’, and ‘Our state-first’ principle. Using content analysis as a research method, this study analyzes the discourses on ‘nation firstism’ from 2000 to 2019 found in the Rodong sinmun. In 2004, the discourses on ‘nation firstism’ differentiated into ‘Our nation-first’, a discourse aimed at unification and set the Korean people as the subject of practice; and ‘Joseon-nation first’, a discourse aimed at socialist development and North Koreans as the subject of practice. This divergence was maintained from 2006 to 2011, but the influence of the discourse showed a weakening pattern. After Kim Jong Un came to power, from 2012 to 2019 the influence of ‘Nation Firstism’ discourse weakened even more. ‘Kim Jong Il patriotism’ and ‘Our state-first’ discourses inherit the function of the ‘Joseon-nation first’ discourse, with the aim to develop socialism. The agent of practice was set as the North Korean people. The logical structure of the discourse of ‘Our nation-first’, with its aim on unification and subject of practice the Korean people, did not emerge from the discourses of ‘Kim Jong Il patriotism’ and ‘Our state-first’. The discourse toward unification weakened during the Kim Jong Un era. This study interprets this as the result of Kim Jong Un’s perception of unification being different from his predecessors, as well as the changed inter-Korean relations.
