The importance of researching social problems related to the loneliness of the low-income elderly people living alone and searching for social intervention is emphasized. This study aimed to examine the mediating effects of participation in social activity in the influence of health promotion behaviors and loneliness in low-income aged people living alone. The research data were collected from 294 elderly recipients of national basic living security who are living alone. This study used the path analysis to tested the effects of health promotion behaviors on the loneliness of low-income elderly people and the mediating effects of social participation activities. The findings of the study identified that health promotion behaviors and participation in social activity had a direct effect on loneliness and health promotion behaviors had an indirect effect on loneliness through the mediating effect of participation in social activity. This study identified the mediating effects of social participation of low-income elderly people living alone, which is the significance of this study in terms of overcoming the limitations of the direct effects of previous studies on loneliness. Based on the results, practical suggestions to decrease the loneliness of low-income elderly people living alone were discussed.
