Biliary atresia (BA) is a hepatic disease characterized as blockage of bile flow caused by the absence of extrahepatic ducts. Even after a successful Kasai surgery, a considerable number of patients exhibit hepatocellular dysfunction due to mitochondrial mutations. Previously, we identified the BA-specific SNP-like mitochondrial mutations in the ND2 and ND4 subunits of the complex I. To investigate the effect of those mutations on the structure and function of complex I, we generated Escherichia coli mutant strains lacking the ND2 and ND4 subunits as microbial counterparts, respectively.
