Everyone, with or without a disability, has the right to make decisions about their own life. The supported decision-making process is a natural right for people with developmental disabilities and plays an important role in the lives of people with such disabilities. It allows people with developmental disabilities to make their own judgments and decisions by providing sufficient information for decision-making. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the concept of supported decision-making and to present issues and implications for the welfare of the disabled based on the contents of the Mental Capacity Act. To achieve this, the main issues of the Mental Capacity Act, such as the concept of supported decision-making, the philosophy and support principles of the Mental Capacity Act, the concept and evaluation of mental capacity, and the meaning of ‘the best interests’ as mentioned in the Act, were examined. Based on the main contents, a reflection on the disability welfare field for supported decision-making, institutional supplementation of the adult guardianship system, application of the directions and strategies for the practice of support decision-making such as mental capacity and assessment, and the provision of the role of a supporter were suggested. Based on these results, this study recommends that the opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to live more independently and with dignity are empowered by enhancing their understanding of service providers for supported decision-making and strengthening their practical capabilities.
