Katherine Mansfield devoted her entire life to writing short stories on various subjects until she died of pulmonary tuberculosis at 34. Instead of the conventional plot structure and dramatic development, she focused on examining her characters’ psychology and delicately unraveled their traumatized inner world. She offered an acute insight into the marginalized women who had been pushed outside of the emerging modernist society, seeking desperate escape from their messy reality. This study aims to examine the movement of Mansfield’s two female characters from fantasy to reality and the inevitable result of their being thrown into disillusionment. To this end, I have analyzed “The Tiredness of Rosabel” and “Miss Brill,” scrutinizing the way Rosabel’s romantic idealism is connected to her suppressed desire and Miss Brill’s narcissism leads to destructive self-awakening. Rosabel and Miss Brill, who are impoverished, lonely, and unappreciated, dream of an alternative to their humdrum reality. However, the sharp contrast between fantasy and reality inevitably brings about a reversal of their expectations and disillusionment. Employing suggestions, symbols, and images as a foreground, Mansfield vividly conveys the process of concomitant disillusionment that her fictional female characters go through in the denouement.
