Yan Shu Xia (1982~) and Chen Yu-Hsuan (1985~) are two young female writers of the new generation writers in Taiwan. They are both inspirational in their stylish proses and short story writings, while Chen currently also endeavors to complete her third novel. This essay will analyze their writing strategies as young writers who were born in the post-80s generation. Yan Shu Xia (her real name is Liu Shu Zhen) received her doctorate from the Graduate Institute of Taiwanese Literature, National Cheng Chi University. Published White Horse Walking Through Dawn (2013) and Life of Nothingness (2018),Yan is now an assistant professor at the Department of Chinese Literature, Tunghai University. She has been awarded Lin Rong-San Literary award and Chiu-ko Literary award. Chen Yu Hsuan received her bachelor degree from the Dept. of Chinese Literature, National Taiwan Normal University. She received her M.A. degree from the Graduate Institute of Creative Writing and English Literature, Tunghua University. She has also been awarded Lin Rong-San Literary award, China Times Literary award, and Religion Literary Award. She has published short stories and co-authored her exchange writer journal at Vermont with He Jing-Yao in the collection: There is No Curry in Vermont: Remembering Days in Maverick Writing Studios (2016). Her two novels: Misfortune Man (2015) and It Never Snows in the South (2020) are tentatively entitled as the first two series of her “Trilogy of the South”. She is now teaching Chinese Literature at Changhua Senior high school. These two writers are both educators and their unique creative writing backgrounds grant them a type of “In-betweenness” which seems to cast their positions in the middle of two genres: Prose and Novel/Fiction. As most Taiwanese younger generation writers participated in exchange writing workshops and they have also travelled wildly, Yan and Chen’s works can be regarded as weaving their common routines as an ordinary woman and a writer who moves from one place to another. In this essay, I intend to discuss the particular feature of feminine writings in which they demonstrate their literariness in depicting daily movements in different living spaces. They travel in between their lives and writings, whereas their works redefine multiple writing themes without a specific itinerary in linear style. Their characteristics in writings challenges contemporary Taiwanese writers’ creative forms, shifting ideas into the unknown haunted lands with ghosts, bodies, spirits, and past memories.
