Ischemic stroke is one of the major diseases and leading cause of death in the worldwide. In particular, ischemic stroke is induced by the occlusion of the cerebral blood vessel due to either embolism or thrombus, thus this serious occurrence leads to the major cause of long-term disability in surviving patients. Sildenafil, as known as Viagra is a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor and effect the nitric oxide-cyclic guanosine monophosphate pathways, which are deeply involved in the pathogenesis of the neurological diseases by causing intracellular accumulation of cGMP. Therefore, sildenafil may have a favorable therapeutic effect on the treatment of stroke, neurodegenerative disorders and vascular dementia by enhancing angiogenesis and neurogenesis.
