This article is to look into the syntactic status of dative idioms. Based on the classification of the purported dative idioms, it argues that only Type-1 and Type-2 are authentic dative idioms while the other types are seemingly dative idioms. It explores the availability of the dative alternation in terms of the two features [+Poss] and [+Fig] and then claims that the idiomatic dative alternation should be distinct from the non-idiomatic alternation such that the former applies at PF while the latter at Syntax. Provided that idioms must obey the locality condition, it explains the contrast in the syntactic opacity between idiomatic and non-idiomatic datives, with leading to the conclusion that dative idioms are valid data for syntactic analyses of the dative alternation.
