This study explores the space in Kim Soo-Young"s poetry “Variation s of Love” and the problem of revolution. Through a series of poetic spaces of ‘Nature-Room-City,’ his work shows joy in the process in which the revolution arrives (Nature), the reflection on the revolutionary successes and failures (Room) and the practical value and meaning of the revolution (City).
The former part of the work, Lines 1-16, uses the revolution that arrived in a situation where people"s inner capacity has not yet been prepared as a metaphor for nature. The meaning of nature as a space that contains an archetypal image of revolution can also be seen in the work like “Prayer,” which faithfully reflects the aspects of the April 19 Revolution. Through the lines, such as “Following the rule of fair mother nature / Ridiculously simply achieved / Our revolution,” we can clearly understand the meaning of nature as a space of revolution.
Lines 17-28 presents a room as a space where self-reflection and methodological inquiry on the revolution are conducted. In Kim Soo-Young"s poetry, the room is a physical space described as disconnection or darkness. Lines 21-24 specify two rooms where a child and a grandmother reside. This strongly implies that the room is a space that contains the value of each generation and space that keeps personal beliefs.
The latter part of the work, Line 29 through the last line, presents the city as a poetic space. This part shows the desire of the speaker who wishes that the value of the revolution would penetrate the lifeworld. Cities such as ‘Bombay, New York, and Seoul’ which are not a djacent temporally and spatially are listed to emphasize the universal value of Love-Revolution. Especially, what draws attention includes the statement like “From the fatigue of the city / We will learn.” As the words, ‘fatigue’ and ‘learning’ are put side by side in one sentence, the speaker’s attitude can be noted: The problem of the revolution should be reviewed in the life-world of ‘City.’ “Variations of Love” is a work in which the arrival and development of the revolution and the reflective review of the revolution go on sequentially, which captures a moment of a historical change of the revolution through the concreteness of space.
