On seeing the transplanting of temple’s Sect with the institutional change of the political trend and monk-managing in Won Intervention, I understand the background and process of the priest administration-transition in the reference to Girimsa’s Sect and prestige fluctuation.
Gyeongju Girimsa was the place which Gakyu as grand master in Zen Sect Gajisanmun in middle 13th C. became the head monk after Newondang. In earlier 14th C. Yugajong priest Haengyeong and Zen Sect grand master Seonji were prime priests. In earlier Choseon it was the one of 18 main temples of Zen Sect.
In Won-Intervention monk-managing was changed with Chungseon Kingship Recovering. Won Emperor adopted the Buddhistbureaucratization in the center of Emperor teacher. With modeling this, King Chungseon also controled its administration power as the trust with naming priest-ranks. Through Chamhoibu and silve-seal Misu vicariated the King’s monk-ranking-decision power. After Retreating the Kingship, King Chungseon dominated the priestsystem through the letter politics.
On the basis of 1) Sutra-Coping-Entertainment with Girimsa head-monk Seonji and Imseo who was against King Chungseon and donated for the case in earlier 14th C., 2) that Misu’s pupil Haengyeong was Girimsa controler-monk, Girimsa’s Sect moved between Yugajong and Zenjong in many times.
