The purpose of this study is to identify the amount of the private education expenses for 2~3 years college students and to suggest the implications for related policies. The private education expenses are composed of private tutoring expenditure and general expenditure for college education. The expenditure for private tutoring is divided into private tutoring fees for English and other languages and private education expenditure for job preparation. The general private education expenditure is divided into directly education-related expenses and indirectly education-related expenses. This study applies the method of the Probit and regression for analyzing the private tutoring expense and quintile regression for analyzing the general private expense.
The results of the analysis showed that the private tutoring expenditure is significantly associated with college major, student’s grade, parents’ income, participation in job, college location and size, level of satisfaction with the job support program of the college, the amount of the government funding program. On the other hand, general private education expenditure directly related with college education is strongly affected by the gender, major field, parents’ income, college location and size, the amount of scholarship and government funding programs. The general education expenditure indirectly related with college education is significantly associated with the major, parents’ income, college size and location. The implications of these findings are discussed here.
