Mycobacterium abscessus (MAB) is one of rapid growing, multidrug resistant nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) causing various diseases including pulmonary disorder. In case of clinical MAB infection, because of multidrug resistant characteristic, to identify host immune defense mechanism is very important. In recent years, the importance of type 1 interferon (IFN) in various bacterial infection has been revealed. However, the role of type 1 IFN in MAB infection is still remains unknown compared to other NTM species and M. tuberculosis. Previously, we identified that type 1 IFN enhances the bacterial clearance in MAB-infected macrophages by augmenting nitric oxide production in vitro.
