The purpose of this study is to show the educational value of teaching potential meaning inference. For this I define the term ‘potential meaning’ and explain the function of potential meaning inference. The concept of potential meaning is similar to premise, yet potential meaning refers to wider range of concept than premise. Potential meaning means pre-existing conditions that is required for the explicit meaning of text to stand. It refers to premise, entailment, reason, evidence and so on. It also generally refers to the situation that the writer was in; including writer’s knowledge, value, viewpoint, culture, social system, custom, etc. Inference of potential meaning has three functions: it makes the meaning of text more reasonable and elaborate, helps to resolve and produces and focuses on the viewpoints against existing ones. Inference of potential meaning leads students to think about contents of text critically and creatively. Therefore we need to know the importance of teaching inference of potential meaning and strengthen teaching inference in reading and language art education.
