This study is designed to emphasize the significance of catechism as a genre of documents of East-West Exchanges in Early Modern Period and to analyze Alessandro Valignano’s Catechismus Christianae Fidei (1586) which was composed in Latin in the context of East Asian mission. It explores the historical background of the genre of catechism (II), then investigates the apologetic strategies of Valignano’s catechism(III), and finally reveals its characteristics through comparison with Michele Ruggieri’s Vera et Brevis Divinarum Rerum Expositio (1582) (IV). It demonstrates that this catechism consists of rational argumentations and statements based on faith, that his apologetic theology emphasizes the notion of one principle as the creator, ruler and savior as well as the concept of soul as a spiritual substance, its immortality, and the retribution in the end of the world, that it defends Christianity by utilizing philosophical concepts such as efficient cause, substantial form, four elements, matter and form. This study corroborates that Valignano’s catechism proves to be a new development of catechism literature in the context of East-West exchanges.
