This paper discusses the issue of the Sino-Korean pronunciation of “?”. In Korea, it is normative to transliterate a Chinese name according to its original pronunciation. However, in actual speech and writing, the Sino-Korean pronunciation is adopted quite frequently. Recently, the character “?”, which has the Mandarin pronunciation “yue[?e]”, is found transcribed as “모[mo]”. The pronunciations “yue[?e]” and “모[mo]” are significantly different from each other, and cannot be regarded as a corresponding pair. Through investigating historical literature, and utilizing the Chinese text database Zhongguo Jiben Gujiku, we have discovered the cause of such a mismatch. “?” was homophonous with “月” in Middle Chinese, and if it underwent regular phonetic changes, its Standard Korean pronunciation would have been “월[w?l]”. “?” seems to have gained the pronunciation “모[mo]” due to the following reasons. Firstly, “??”, the ancient graph of “瑁”, is considerably similar in graphic shape to “?”. Secondly, in China, the graph “?” came to regular use no earlier than the Ming dynasty, the usage of which was mostly limited to proper nouns, and it is hard to assume that it was a part of the regular Chinese character inventory in the Korean Peninsula. Thirdly, while establishing the Korean national technological standard, the pronunciation “모[mo]” is issued to “?”, which seems to be a temporary measure to encode “??”, instead of the rarely used “?”. Since the current version of Unicode supports the encoding of “??”, the pronunciation “모[mo]” should be transferred to “??”, and leave “?” with the single pronunciation of “월[w?l]”.
