The purpose of this article is examining the recognition and aspects of writing about a final consonant which is one of the linguistic features appeared in Korean textbook in Enlightenment period. In Enlightenment period, 7 consonants, which are ‘ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ, ㅅ, ㅇ’, were used in the space of a final consonant. However, Korean textbook proposes 8~9 phonemes as a final consonant. Each textbooks showed different kind and number of consonants. The phonemes ‘ㄷ’ and ‘ㅣ’ showed a difference to others. In the case of ‘ㄷ’, it is the result of following the explanation of traditional orthography. Although ‘ㅣ’ is a vowel, it is sorted as a final consonant in several textbooks. The compiler of the textbook may recognize a final consonant as the sound that united thirdly. In this period, the standard orthography was not established. Therefore, the orthography of a continual spelling, a separate spelling, a double spelling, and a double phonemic writing was mixed. In a declension, a separate spelling mainly used and there was no continual spelling in the declension in some textbooks. In an inflection, there was not a big difference in the frequency of words that used a continual spelling, a separate spelling, and a double spelling. Most of verb stem final ‘ㄹ’ was written in a continual spelling in the inflection. Consonants which showed excessive syllabication in a morpheme are ‘ㄱ, ㄴ, ㅁ, ㅂ’. They were mostly syllabicated in both declension and inflection. In the case of double final consonants, only ‘ㄺ’ and ‘ㄼ’ used maintained form. Other than that, a continual spelling or a simplification of a consonant cluster occurred.
