This paper approaches Edmund Spenser’s Amoretti as a meta-literary piece, a literary text that discusses the nature of literature, and focuses on the poet’s position as an Elizabethan writer. Throughout the sonnet sequence, Spenser repeatedly uses metaphors associated with reading and writing. He is, at some parts, discontent with his incapability to fully demonstrate his lady’s beauty through his verse, but his confidence as a writer builds up as he approaches the end of the sequence. Through Amoretti, he not only comments on the nature of composing poetry and his position as an Elizabethan writer, but also predicts and celebrates his own literary success. In light of the need for further criticism on a work that has long been overshadowed by the massive success of The Faerie Queene, this paper explores Spenser’s consciousness and confidence as a writer that are manifested in Amoretti by examining the sonnets that are associated with the act of writing or his position as an Elizabethan poet.
