The looting and return of cultural properties faced a significant watershed after the two World Wars. With the official end of the imperialist era, the frame of the world system centered on the European powers was broken. Then, the beginning and decline of the Cold War era, when the two great axes of the Soviet Union and the United States opposed, and the strengthening of US hegemony have had a great influence not only on actual politics but also on academic circles. In the 21st century, therefore, I would like to consider how the discourses of cultural property are being studied and analyzed in the fields of archeology through three major issues. The first issue is the relationship between capitalism and cultural property. It is a well-known fact that the elements of society, whether willing or not, are always affected by the political and economic situation of the time. The second is about the relationship between nationalism and cultural property. In the era of post-imperialism and globalization, we need to examine the position of nationalism in the discourse of cultural property. This is because while the powerful ideology of nationalism plays the role of a guardian who criticizes the plunder and destruction of cultural properties, at the same time, it follows another imperialist ideology that suppresses cultural diversity. The third is the relationship between the postcolonial theory and the problem of returning cultural property. This course examines how the postcolonial theory, which seeks to critically reconstruct the history of the imperial period from the perspective of the colonists, and to reproduce the history of various subjects, has an interface with archaeology.
