The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between parenting behavior, grit of middle school students, academic helplessness, and academic engagement. The participants were 2,438 middle school students from 1st wave(2018) and 2nd wave(2019) of the ‘Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018’. The data were analyzed with structural equation modeling. The results of this study were as follows. First, positive and negative parenting behaviors of 1st graders in middle school didn’t have a significant direct influence to academic helplessness of 2nd graders in middle school. Second, positive and negative parenting behaviors of 1st graders in middle school had significant indirect influences on academic helplessness and engagement of 2nd graders in middle school through grit of 1st graders in middle school Third, positive and negative parenting behaviors of 1st graders in middle school had significant indirect influences on academic engagement of 2nd graders in middle school through grit of 1st graders and academic helplessness of 2nd graders in middle school. The results of this study indicated that the internal factors such as grit or academic helplessness are important for academic performance of middle school students.
