This study explores the pathway from maternal empathic ability to the child's caring behaviors via their parenting attitude promiting their child's autonomy. Here, we surveyed 242 mothers and teachers of 3- to 5-year-old children attending childcare centers and kindergartens in Cheongju. Data were collected and analyzed through reliability tests, descriptive statistics, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 22.0. As per our findings, it was determined that the higher the maternal empathy level, the higher the display of autonomous parenting attitude. The higher the mothers’ autonomous parenting attitude, the more likely their children exhibited caring behaviors toward themselves and, eventually, for others. Therefore, mothers' autonomous parenting is seen as a mediator between their empathic ability and their child's caring behaviors. However, this mediation effect of autonomous parenting remains limited as the path from the maternal empathic ability to children’s social caring behaviors is not statistically significant. This study discusses the impact of maternal parenting behaviors on young children's caring behaviors.
