This study was undertaken to examine the effects of various maternal factors on preschooler"s self-esteem: these include maternal parenting behaviors, maternal parenting stress, and self-esteem of the mother.
A total of 98 participants included 3-to 5-year-old preschoolers (43 boys, 55 girls) and their mothers. Maternal parenting scale (Ruy & Lee, 2007), maternal parenting stress scale (Han, 1996), mother"s self-esteem scale (Rosenberg, 1965), and preschooler"s self-esteem scale (Dan & Lee, 2006) were used for this study. The data collected were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, correlation analysis, ANOVA and stepwise regression analysis.
The major findings are summarized as follows: (1) no gender based differences were observed in the self-esteem of preschoolers. (2) no age based differences were seen in the self-esteem of preschoolers. (3) with regards of maternal parenting behaviors, overprotection and self-esteem of mothers impacted the preschooler"s self-esteem. We conclude that maternal parenting behaviors and mother"s self-esteem influenced the self-esteem levels of preschooler.
