Okazaki Hisahiko, known for Abe Shinzo’s personal adviser on security issues, had made strong influences to Japan’s mainstream conservative politicians’ views on its security and history. In the last three decades, his emphasis on urgent necessity of the constitutional revision and on the empowerment of the US-Japan alliance had widely spread within Japan’s security policy group. This is an evidence of Japan’s conservative turn in its security policy arena. In addition, while he had continuously criticized left-wing historians, he participated in the Japanese Society for History Textbook Reform(Tsukuru Kai). Unlike, however, other traditionalists in Japan, he considered democratic political system during the Meiji and Taisho eras as Japan’s own historical product but not one implanted from the western world. Okazaki’s view on the ‘democracy Japanese style’ is a critical factor differentiated him from other traditionalists. While it limits the full-brown of exclusive traditionalist perspectives in Japan’s discourse on its national identity, it also provides a logic for the value-oriented diplomacy.
