Kim Hyeon opened a new horizon for pop culture through critical examination of pop culture before any korean critic of his time. He asserted the development of Korean 'customs' and archaeological exploration of culture and criticized the fantasy of consumer culture that is misled by 'sexuality' from the late 1960s. He also carefully analyzed the pop cultural phenomena such as martial arts novels. From the mid-1970s, he emphasized that pop culture is a new form of art in the modern society. For this purpose, he argued that the concepts of ‘public’ and ‘pop culture’ should be reestablished and sought the possibility of 'culture of and for the public' as culture truly enjoyed by the public. Among the various genres of pop culture, Kim Hyeon was particularly interested in comics. He accepted comics as an important genre of art that can fulfill a social role. He performed critical work to solidify the position and value of comics as art. Kim Hyeon was able to examine the pop culture seriously with pioneering insights because he enjoyed pop culture himself and did not forget that he was a public citizen, not a narrow-minded elitist. There is no cultural hierarchy based on 'class' such as ‘high-class culture and low-class culture.’ There was culture that anyone could enjoy as members of the public.
