The current study aims to explore the scope assignment of universally quantified NPs and negation in Korean in terms of adult sentence processing. The study used two self-paced reading tasks to measure online reading times. In the first experiment Korean native speakers (n=44) were presented sentences containing negation and a universally quantified subject NP. In the second experiment another group of Korean native speakers (n=38) read sentences containing negation and a universally quantified object NP. The reading time analyses showed that Korean native speakers strongly preferred the surface scope interpretation to the inverse scope reading, irrespective of the two types of negation form (short form vs. long form) or syntactic position of quantified NPs (subject vs. object). In addition, the speakers started to integrate the inverse scope interpretation upon encountering the second operator in the sentence. Based on the results, we argue that interpretive preferences for scope are associated with an efficiency-based processor, which pursues to minimize the burden on working memory during processing routines.
