In this study, the uses of hedge in the conversation between university male students in Korea and Japan were investigated with respect to the degree of intimacy. This study shows that hedge is more frequently used in Japanese than in Korean. And it is suggested that hedge is strategically used according to human relationships with conversation partner. Especially, it is found that the factor of degree of intimacy has a great influence on the use of hedge in Japanese compared with that in Korean. It is also suggested that hedge plays a more active and important role in Japanese in comparison to Korean in young generations’ conversation. However, in both Korea and Japan, hedge functions as a language strategy to communicate smoothly with consideration of the conversation partner. Based on the results of this study, I will try to analyze the use of hedge in detail by categorizing hedge according to various human relationships.
