This study is to discuss over how musical notation and notated music have been evolved in India where cultural formation has been established through oral・aural transmission. The discussion includes the matters on musical formation and notation, evolvement of notation and notated music, and the changes and prospect of musical map since the 20th century. Having differentiated between musical notation and notated music, I intended to distinguish method of notation from result of it so as to make an emphasis on the premises that every musical elements for Indian music cannot be notated. While notated music as form of sheet commonly means a perfect reproduction of musical performance, such a notation in India is no more than the medium having the least information only for elements ‘being able to be notated’. In other words, it is the function of Indian notation system that let one recall memory of music formed by oral transmission. Although devised and evolved in order to contain more musical information, Indian notation system cannot encompass the own characteristic elements except basic mode and simple form. Therefore most of Indian musicians recognize that oral transmission is essential to their music. Indian musical notation and notated music have evolved in a different context from Western’s. Indian musical notation contains a very basic and limited information as minimum requirement for recalling the memory of oral transmission. The reason why only the least source of oral transmission and actual performance is applied to the notation can be assumed that firm trust in the powerful authority of oral tradition and actual performance has become deeply rooted in musical culture of India. One can perform music by means of learning just with notation and recorded source, but it may be happened thereafter not to able to express ‘musical elements not being able to be notated’ that Indian music has put great emphasis upon. That is to say, the process to learn and accept the way to perform music is directly related and does affect to musical thought and actual performance of musician's own inertia. Hence it can be asserted that oral transmission is the very method to keep and preserve music much more than musical notation in India unlike Western that has considered musical notation as the method for preserving music.
