Director Hwang Dong-hyeok’s 〈Squid Game〉, released through Netflix in September 2021, achieved global success through a strategy that emphasizes characters by bringing the strengths of the existing ‘death game genre’. In the meantime, the death game genre has not been noticed in Korea, but in the West and Japan, it has been produced in various media such as ‘novels, comics, animations, movies, and video games’ and is forming a mania.
This study tried to analyze the characteristics of creations made with the subject of death games, and to analyze what strategies the 〈Squid Game〉, which has recently become an issue, could receive popular support. As a research method, the existing death game genre and 〈Squid Game〉 are compared and analyzed focusing on the world view, character setting, and events(games). The scope of research is limited to novels that are the beginnings of the death game genre and works that are well-known as images. The purpose of this study is to examine what aspects of the existing death game genre have been brought to by 〈Squid Game〉and what differentiates only 〈Squid Game〉.
As a result of the study, 〈Squid Game〉 effectively created suspense, thrill, and conflict through the setting of the death game genre, which provided the audience with the fun that the existing genre had. The difference between 〈Squid Game〉 and the existing death game genre is that it simplifies the game and emphasizes the drama that comes from the character’s psychology and human relationships. 〈Squid Game〉 has achieved reality by escaping from the conventional genre formula in which a heroic character solves a game and depicting the stories of the socially underprivileged. It also satirizes social inequality and absurd competition systems through games. As a result, the death of the main characters was not wasted for fun in the genre, but made meaning and strengthened the sense of the theme. In summary, 〈Squid Game〉 adds elements such as ‘realistic characters, satire of reality through games, and the construction of tragic emotions’ on top of the existing death game genre. 〈Squid Game〉 presented a new direction to the existing death game genre, which was difficult to acquire realism with unrealistic settings. In addition, it satirizes reality through games and emphasizes the drama that comes from human relationships in the game, surpassing the limits of the existing death game genre that pursued only the fun of games, and it became a work that left an emotional lingering impression by giving things to think about.
