인공지능 기술이 급속하게 발달하고 일상생활에서 손쉽게 인공지능을 활용할 수 있을만큼 보편화되고 있다. 미국, 중국, 일본, 한국 등의 주요 국가에서는 대학교 뿐만 아니라 초·중등학교에서도 인공지능 교육을 기본 교육으로 도입하는 계획을 마련하고 있다. 이에 따라 인공지능을 손쉽게 배우거나, 인공지능을 활용할 수 있는 다양한 인공지능 프로그램 또는 서비스들이 개발되고 있다. Orange 플랫폼은 인공지능, 데이터 마이닝을 위한 오픈 소스 플랫폼으로서 인공지능 교육, 인공지능 응용, 데이터 과학 응용 분야 등 폭넓은 분야에 유용하게 활용될 수 있다. 특히, Orange는 위젯(widget)이라고 하는 시각적인 컴포넌트들을 마우스로 끌어 당겨 연결함으로써 인공지능 응용을 만들 수 있기 때문에 인공지능 프로그래밍에 익숙하지 않은 사용자들이 인공지능 기술에 진입하는데 도움이 된다. 또한, Orange는 파이썬 오픈 소스 라이브러리를 사용할 뿐만 아니라, Image Analytics, Text Mining 등과 같은 다양한 애드온을 제공하기 때문에 인공지능에 익숙한 사용자들에게도 유용하게 활용될 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 이미지 분류, 건강 데이터를 이용한 학습 등을 통해 Orange의 기능을 소개하고, 대표적인 활용 예시를 제공함으로써 인공지능과 데이터 과학 교육에 도움되고자 한다.
