This research analyzed the storytelling of various genres of documentaries narrating independence movement of Korea. The research focused on not only the aspect of contents but also on the aspect of form and looked into how transmedia storytelling organized in each documentary. In this research, 120 episodes of 5 genres of documentaries were examined. The documentaries had significance to analyze as they represented stories of independence movement with different subjects. According to the analysis, the documentaries are based on narrative’s expandability in terms of story. Also, in terms of discourse, they reinforce users’ understandings on reality by expanding users’ experience and comprehension. This implies that through transmedia storytelling, documentaries could be a space of participation and introspection where different users’ subjective recognition and experience intersect with each other. This is because transmedia storytelling of documentaries expects that users are able to make their own conclusions on social issues including historic events and to constitute meanings of reality while it grants far much more active roles to users compared to other types of documentaries.
