Report Errors
The goal of this essay is to propose a solution to the puzzle of intentional identity. The puzzle is the difficulty of formalizing sentences which report that some pairs of propositional attitudes have a common focus. The anaphoric relation of the noun phrase and the pronoun in the different attitudinal contexts are not expressed in the analysis which replaces the anaphoric pronoun with the description. However, quantifying in the propositional attitudes are not satisfactory either. After I scrutinize the difficulties and the attempt to deal with them, I will argue that we have to introduce a thought object to solve the problems. Looking into the Edelberg’s new puzzle shows that the existential analysis which takes a thought object as variable value is not an appropriate solution. A new analysis allots thought object as references both to the noun phrase and to the pronoun, depending on Donnellan who claims that indefinites semantically contribute the object they refer. Finally, I response to the objection that we cannot discuss the identity of thought object objectively.
