This paper examined the abolition of Lee Hyung-sang’s shrine and how to Bonpuri respond to it for “Kimnyeongdang Bonpuri”, “Yeongcheon Lee-Moksa Bonpuri”, and “Duribiletdang Bonpuri.”
“Kimnyeongdang Bonpuri” and “Yeongcheon Lee-Moksa Bonpuri” are interested in the activities of Lee Hyung-sang in Jeju Island after he was appointed as a moksa of Jeju Island.
The former has long focused on the revenge of the Dangshin who murdered Lee Hyung-sang with the Bonpuri of a village shrine in a region with strong shamanism. On the other hand, the latter is the Bonpuri belonging to a part of the teaching book for the younger generation’s shaman, and in addition, it aims to convey the specific circumstances of the abolition of Lee Hyung-sang’s shrine. In particular, it is focusing on drawing Lee Hyung-sang more inferiorly by adding new motifs that were not in the Bonpuri with other legends.
On the other hand, “Duribiletdang Bonpuri” focuses on reminiscences after Lee Hyung-sang returns to land. The appearance of Park Dong-ji and Kim Dong-ji, who benefit from Lee Hyung-sang’s participation, resembles the appearance of indigenous officials who voluntarily abolished the shrine after receiving political and economic benefits from Lee Hyung-sang at the records. However, Dangshin in “Duribiletdang Bonpuri” do not turn a blind eye to them, but rather embrace them. And choose ‘coexistence’ with them. This phase of “Duribiletdang Bonpuri” can be summarized as clearly illustrating one aspect of the value of ‘coexistence’ implied in Jeju mythology.
