In this study, the relationship between the color of fall foliage and memory color was investigated for establishing a database for CG production. To establish a database, the range of fall foliage colors was measured using the colorimeter, and the memory color of fall foliage was examined by CG graphic designers. Firstly, 250 leaves of 15 trees among fall foliage were collected and measured on the same day. Secondly, the memory color of fall foliage by CG graphic designers was investigated. The memory color was divided into two types: memory colors by terms and shapes. As a result, the front and back sides of the leaves showed the color difference. The difference is caused by characteristics such as the position the leaves face with respect to sunlight, and the thickness and glossiness of the leaves. In addition, both the term and shape memory colors tended to have higher saturation than the actual fall foliage. On the other hand, for lightness, the term memory color was slightly darker and the shape memory color was more brightly remembered. These results indicates that the color could be limited when reproducing the color of fall foliage by relying only on the memory color of the CG graphic designers. More colorful fall foliage in the CG graphic image based on the color measurement data and memory color can provide the viewer with a variety of color experiences. Furthermore, the relationship between color gamut research and memory color for various natural colors needs to be clarified to utilize a database for image color reproduction and color design.
