An epitaph that was found from a tomb where both Jo In-bon(趙因本, Zhào Yīnbĕn) and his wife Madame Buyeo(扶餘氏) were buried together, serves as a new historical material that could shed some light on the lives of Buyeo Pung (扶餘豐) and his descendants which we previously did not really know very well. The epitaph refers to Buyeo Pung as ‘Daebang Taeja(帶方太子),’ stating in no uncertain terms that he was the son of King Euija of Baekje(義慈王). In that regard this material is certainly worth scrutinizing, as the academic community has been debating the relationship between King Euija and Buyeo Pung, and the identity of the last crown prince(太子) of Baekje for a very long time.
It is believed that Buyeo Pung was sent to the Wae(倭) Japan by his father King Euija. Therefore Buyeo Pung’s daughter, Madame Buyeo, must have been born in Japan and only came to the late Baekje territory when her father Buyeo Pung returned there for the Buyeo Resurrection movement. After his troops’ defeat at the Baek-gang river(白江) battle Buyeo Pung reportedly fled to Goguryeo, but his daughter seems to have remained at the Ju’ryu-seong(周留城) fortress before surrendering to the Dang forces and ending up in China. The epitaph reveals details of her life in Dang China, which seems to have been a turbulent one considering the contents of this epitaph.
The epitaph also lets us know the marital relationships that were established among Buyeo Pung’s descendants. Jo In-bon, who married Madame Buyeo, was a person who joined Dang and helped Dang in its war efforts against Goguryeo and Baekje. His ancestors like Zhào Chāozōng(趙超宗) and Zhào Jiǒng(趙煚) are also listed in Chinese history books. It should also be noted that Madame Buyeo’s daughter, the grand daughter of Buyeo Pung, married Yuan Qianyao (源乾曜), who was a governmental minister during Dang Xuánzōng(玄宗)’s reign, and Madame Buyeo’s grandson (her daughter’s son) Yuán Qing(源淸) was the son-in-law of Emperor Xuánzōng himself. All these relationships should be examined further, with the fact that Buyeo Yung(扶餘隆)’s descendants too had marital relationships with the Dang royal family taken into account as well.
