On March 30th, 2021, the Japanese government announced the results from screening high school social textbooks. According to the result, 30 textbooks (20 publishers) for compulsory subjects in social studies passed the screening process. Among them, there are 6 general geography textbooks from 5 publishers, 12 general history textbooks from 7 publishers, and 12 public sector textbooks from 8 publishers. In case of Dokdo, it is mentioned in all social studies textbooks which passed the screening.
This article examines the followings: first, the content of the Dokdo-related descriptions in the required social studies curriculum in Japanese high school system, which passed the screening in 2021, and second, the problems with the descriptions.
As a result of the analysis, it shows that textbooks faithfully follow the High School Curriculum Guideline (學習指導要領) and its Commentary (學習指導要領解說) revised in 2018, and have characteristics for each subject. The general geography textbooks focus on ‘Japan’s inherent territory" and ‘Korea’s illegal occupation’ about the Dokdo. The general history textbooks are on ‘1905’s territorial incorporation of Dokdo,’ and the public sector on ‘Japan’s inherent territory’ and ‘Japan’s peaceful resolution efforts.’
In addition, the Japanese textbooks actively encourage the study of Dokdo by suggesting more various learning methods such as research activities or discussion learning.
