The purpose of this study was to analyze queer images in children"s picture books. The subject of analysis was 42 foreign and domestic children"s picture books containing queer images. According to the quantitative analysis, 53.3% of the queer images shown in the picture book were positive, 26.7% were negative, and 20.0% were neutral. Content analysis was conducted to understand the general characteristics of picture books, and central theme analysis was performed for a qualitative understanding of the text. According to the research results, the core content was the issue of sexual orientation or transgender issues experienced by the protagonist. Child protagonists tended to be portrayed as different from their peers rather than being described in a fixed sexual orientation. Characteristics of child protagonists included clothing selection that subverted the normative gender difference, preference for toys, and expression of affection for same-sex peers. Support from family members, friends, and other key members of the characters was highlighted as a key resource. The main character of the picture book related to the queer image was expressed as experiencing confusion, alienation, and conflict about having characteristics different from others. This study could contribute to academic recognition and discourse on children"s media with queer images.
