In this study, I explored the existence and activities of the private medical personnel during the Koryo Period to restore the reality of pre-modern civil health care. The private medical personnel are those who had given East Asian medicine to a large number of ordinary people.
A closer look at Koryo Period"s medical records showed that there were many ruling classes interested in civil health care. These ruling classes are common in that they were not involved in civil health care to pursue profit.
And there were quite a few people who worked for civil health care in the private sector. They were retired medical officials and local pharmacist officials, medical students and others who did not pass the medical profession, children of medical officials and local pharmacist officials, and the servants who served local medical officials.
The activation of civil health care is concretely revealed in the cases of Lee Sang-ro(李商老) and Chae Hong-cheol(蔡洪哲) who were the two pillars of the professional medical workers(業醫) and intellect medical practitioners(知醫). The professional medical workers were able to make a living, and the intellect medical practitioners had intentions to protect their property in addition to their responsibilities as intellectuals.
