The greatest characteristic of design knowledge is that its theoretical content has direct links to the working area. Therefore, practical-based empirical design knowledge should be able to influence the formation of a design theoretical framework. At the same time, the validity of the theoretical framework needs to be verified through practical application. Therefore, this study aims to examine the two areas of design knowledge: practical knowledge and theoretical knowledge, and how to make these design knowledge an academic curriculum. To this end, this study examined the characteristics of design knowledge based on the general concept of knowledge and the classification of knowledge and the generation of knowledge, followed by how practical knowledge and theoretical knowledge interacted in design knowledge.
As a result of the study, design knowledge was also found to be created and developed, with practical and theoretical knowledge affecting each other through a circular creation ring. Specifically, examining the theoretical realm of design knowledge through the model of Siegfried Marser, a German design theorist and educator, provided the direction of follow-up research with insight into how to design a systematic theoretical education in future design education.
