In this study, I apply Michael Porter’s value chain model to analyze the management activities of North Korean companies under the implementation of the ‘socialist corporate responsibility management system’ measures. First, I analyze the features of the ‘socialist corporate responsibility management system’ in particular by comparing the corporate law as seen in the Kim Jong-un era against that of the past corporate management system. Second, I divide the management activities into two parts and six fields ― support activities (i.e., firm infrastructure, human resource management, technology development) and primary activities (i.e., procurement, operation, marketing) ― to specifically examine the current operation status and system change in the six fields. Third, I evaluate how the institutional changes relatively improved or stagnated the competitiveness of companies and business activities, and draw significant implications that came as a result of the changes.
