The National Museum of Korea operates a lecture program every Wednesday that is open to anyone interested in the humanities. This program developed out of the lectures for adults and senior citizens (e.g., Eunha Culture School) which began before the museum relocated to its present site in Yongsan. After a process of evolution over the years, it has been held under the name "History and Culture Lectures" since 2013. It attracts the largest number of attendees per session among all learning programs under the Department of Education of the National Museum of Korea. The History and Culture Lectures are particularly popular among senior citizens, who make up about 76 percent of total attendees. Roughly 68 percent of the senior participants have attended the lecture program for at least two years, including the lectures held prior to the relocation to Yongsan, and about 99 percent of them report an intention to continue attending the program. These survey results indicate that active participation by senior citizens should continue in the future. In that case, what roles should a museum play for these regular audiences? How should museums view senior visitors? How can museum cope with changes in society? All of these questions require research and new approaches from diverse perspectives.
In September 2017, Korea officially entered aging society status according to United Nations standards, which define a society as aging when those over 65 occupy at least 14 percent of the total population. Korea"s senior population has been growing since at least 2008 when the population census for citizens with resident registration came to include an advanced statistical system. In addition to the growth of the senior population, the country"s overall standard of living and level of education have also improved, bringing substantial changes to older people"s daily lives and their preference for enjoying culture. Greater significance is being attached to old age than ever before. As centers for lifelong study, museums need to develop and promote education programs on art and culture targeting senior citizens, thereby improving quality of life of older people and better satisfying their educational needs. This will help boost their self-esteem as well. If museum education is to offer a forum for exchange diverse views and considerations rather than merely delivering knowledge on culture, museums must turn toward new approaches. Older citizens can help vitalize this project based on their unique resources, such as diverse experience gained from daily life and a strong motivation to learn what they wish. Using these qualities, seniors can engage in museum education programs as both attendees and program planners or developers. They can help museums take a multilateral approach when developing education programs tailored to senior citizens. Museum education has its own characteristics and many taskes to address, such as identifying an interface with senior citizens, differentiating their programs from those provided by similar institutions, finding ways to attract seniro citizens, and adjusting their methods of operation. In this sense, museum education programs for senior citizens should be develped over the long-term based on systematic preparation.
