In this study, we identified the changes in demand and characteristics for residential space after the outbreak of COVID-19 targeting 1,200 people in the general public. The study results are summarized as follows. First, since the outbreak of Corona, more than 8 out of 10 people(86.3%) spent more time in the house, and the average increment was 4.4 hours. Second, the importance of internal space has increased compared to external space since the outbreak of Corona and have the following ranks; living room(3.78 points), private room(3.69 points), kitchen(3.56 points), yard or garden(3.31 points), balcony or veranda(3.28 points). Third, as the importance of interior and exterior spaces in their houses are increased, 6 out of 10 people(60.8%) were willing to improve or move their homes. beside the change in the importance, ‘small interior space’, ‘limitation on the use of multi-purpose space’, ‘lack of space for outdoor activities’ were appeared as the main causes. Fourth, ‘private room (35.8%)’ was the most frequently requested space for housing improvement after the outbreak of Corona, followed by ‘living room(26.5%)’ and ‘balcony or veranda(12.3%)’. Finally, based on the results of the previous analysis, we found out that changeable space and structure in residential design is required responding to unexpected pandemic. When designing houses, it is necessary to take into account changes in the importance of space as well as diversification of uses and properly arrange spaces such as balconies and verandas facing the outside air.
