Since The Kagerou Nikki was written in the latter half of the 10th century, there have been a number of typographical errors due to the copying processes. As there was no bibliographical information such as the volume number and the page number, the pages were frequently out of order through printing. Previous studies revealed that the second volume contains two instance of a page-number error and the third volume a single instance of a page-number error. Several hypotheses have been put forward with regard to the reasons for such errors: (i) the errors were present in the original manuscript, which was in scroll form; (ii) the order of pages was swapped because of binding mistakes; (iii) page numbers were mistakenly engraved when a woodblock- printed book was created. The present study, however, reveals that the errors were made because the page numbers were mistakenly assigned (though not all pages were assigned a page number) and the binding process proceeded based on these erroneous page numbers. Ono the other hand, the analysis of the digital image database of The Kagerou Nikki available on the website of The National Institute of Japanese Literature shows that the error in the third volume is absent in the Genroku edition and the Hōreki edition (A), which share the woodblocks used, but present in the Hōreki edition (B) and the Bunsei edition, which share the woodblocks used. Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that the error in the third volume was made in 1756 when Kahei Yasui supplementarily engraved letters on four blocks for the first volume.
