This paper demonstrates the importance of the tactics used to conduct an experiment in limited resources by giving a detailed case study that centers on neutrino oscillation research in the OPERA experiment. These tactics are not currently paid enough attention by scholars on science, but they are necessary for scientists to successfully run experiments and therefore can be regarded as knowledge acquisition methods, or methodologies of experiment with limited resources. In this study, a philosopher who have conducted a fieldwork analyzed experiments together with a scientist who engaged in the experiment. In this collaboration, a model on the dynamism of experiments within the context of resource limitations is presented. From this viewpoint, it is pointed out that Franklin’s epistemology of experiment and the methodologies have a complementary relationship. Critically referring to Latour’s view on the two faces of science, these two faces are drawn as the knowledge acquisition aspect and the resource-managing aspect, a picture that matches the rationalistic stance.
