(Background and Purpose) Recently, the evaluation and improvement of urban space environment in consideration of various users from an integrated design perspective has become an important task domestically. In particular, the importance of creating a sustainable urban space environment which considers the socially disadvantaged and establishes a comprehensive safety environment response system is increasing. Therefore, this study aims to contribute to the improvement of public space safety environment design based on an integrated public space used for safety environment evaluation and plans presented in a previous study. (Method) First, the current safety design characteristics and approaches in the current public design area were identified through existing research and a literature review. Second, based on the above contents and the evaluation index for the integrated safety design evaluation of the downtown public spaces organized in the previous study, the current status evaluation was conducted on four representative downtown public spaces in Seoul city, and the results were analyzed. Finally, through the analysis of the survey results, we propose a direction for improvement for each detailed element of public design to build an integrated safety design for public spaces in consideration of the socially disadvantaged in the downtown area of Seoul City. (Results) In summary, the safety environment in the downtown area is relatively good, but there is a difference in safety issues of the socially disadvantaged, depending on the structure of the space and response to the safety environment. In particular, when installing public spaces and facilities, it is important to plan a pleasant space based on openness and territory by considering the landscape characteristics of various users and spaces in consideration of the social disadvantage. In particular, considerations to increase responsiveness at the point of contact between the public and private sectors, such as improving the design of safety signs in consideration of the socially disadvantaged and responding to cover-up spaces such as piloti, were also required. (Conclusions) The effectiveness of the safety environment evaluation index in consideration of the socially disadvantaged was confirmed, and the direction of improving the safety design of public spaces and facilities in major old cities in Seoul was identified. Considering this, it was found that it is important to plan the safety environment from various perspectives, such as CPTED, Universal Design, and Space Landscape Identity in the downtown area, which is expected to provide important implications for local governments' CPTED improvement plans and guidelines.
