한말숙 소설에 나타난 여성 하위주체성 연구: <별빛 속의 계절>, <Q호텔>을 중심으로

본고는 탈식민주의 담론을 경유하여 <별빛 속의 계절>과 <Q호텔>에 나타난 전후의 사회와 현실을 살피고 그 속에서 식민화·타자화된 여성의 삶-하위주체성에 대하여 논의하였다. 전후의 한국은 일본 제국주의에서 독립한 탈식민의 국가 형식을 띠고 있었으나 미국의 대규모 군사와 경제 원조에 의해 새로운 종속적인 처지에 놓이게 된 점에서 신식민화된 세계로 볼 수 있다. 동시에 전후는 전쟁의 상처를 수습하고 국가의 정치, 경제, 문화, 윤리를 재건하기 위해 민족/국가가 강력한 가부장제와 결속하여 사회통합을 이룩하려고 하였고 그 과정에서 국가 구성원 간의 억압과 착취라는 내부 식민화가 이루어진다. 이때 제국, 국가, 남성에 의하여 내, 외적으로 다층적인 식민화를 경험하는 대상은 한말숙 작품에서 주로 ‘여성’으로 그려지며 여성은 지배계층의 헤게모니에 종속되거나 접근을 부인당한 측면에서 하위주체로서의 면모를 강하게 보인다. 한말숙 초기 문학에서 여성 하위주체는 크게 윤리적, 성적으로 대상화된 여성과 차별적인 경제구조에서 소외된 가난한 여성으로 양상이 나뉜다. 전자는 특히 <별빛 속의 계절>에서 가장 불온한 여성으로 호명되는 ‘양공주’를 통해 형상화되며 국가 재건기의 윤리적 경계와 미군의 성적 전유로 인해 양공주는 자신의 처지를 호소할 수 없는, ‘말할 수 없는 주체’가 된다. 그 누구도 본인의 사정을 들어주지 않으려는 현실 앞에서 그들은 자발적 혹은 강제적으로 침묵하고 있으나 ‘싸늘한 눈초리’라는 반감의 ‘응시’를 통하여 식민주체의 감시와 억압의 시선을 조롱하기도 한다. 여성 하위주체의 후자는 <Q호텔>에서 경제적 난국을 해결하기 위해 ‘미국적인 것’, ‘미국 경제자원’을 구원자로 받아들이는 ‘의식의 식민화’를 드러낸다. 무조건적인 환상과 기대감을 통해 탈-가난의 판타지가 실현될 것 같으나 결국은 경배의 대상인 ‘미국적인 것’에 의해 미래와 행복이 파괴됨으로써 구원자가 아니었다는 실체가 아이러니 기법을 통해 폭로되고 있다. 이는 미국 원조경제의 양면성을 시사한 점이기도 하다. 이처럼 한말숙은 전후를 하위주체의 목소리를 누구도 들어주지 않고, 들으려고 하지 않는 억압의 상황으로 보고, 제국, 국가, 남성에 의해 다층적인 식민화를 겪는 여성 하위주체성의 형상화를 통해 식민담론의 폭력성과 불합리함을 드러낸다. 본고는 위와 같은 당대의 다양한 권력행위에 대한 여성의 반응과 성찰을 살펴봄으로써, 한말숙이 사회와 현실의 실태에 큰 관심을 두고 예민한 탐색과 진단을 해 왔으며, 여성과 사회, 여성과 시대에 대한 진지하고 다층적인 앎을 제공한 점을 확인할 수 있었다.

Study on Women Subalternism in Han Mal-sook’s Novel - Focusing on <The Season in star Light>, <Q Hotel> Kim Jinsook Through the discourse of decolonization, this paper examined the post-war society and reality shown in <The Season in star Light> and <Q Hotel>, the lives and subalternism of women colonized and otherized in them. Post-war society of Korean, it took the form of a state of decolonization independent from Japanese imperialism, but it can be seen as a situation of external colonization of a new colony or a recolonial in that it was in a new subordinate position due to large-scale military and economic aid from the United States. At the same time, internal colonization of oppression and exploitation among members of the state took place simultaneously in the process of achieving social integration in conjunction with a strong patriarchal system to overcome the devastation of war and rebuild the nation's politics, economy, culture, and ethics. At this time, the subject of multi- layered colonization at home and abroad by empires, countries, and men is mainly ‘women’ in Han Mal-sook's works. Women show a strong aspect as subaltern in terms of subordination to the hegemony of the ruling class or denial of access. In the early literature of Han Mal-sook, the female subalterns are largely divided into ethically and sexually targeted women and poor women alienated from the discriminatory economic structure. The former is especially embodied through ‘Yanggongju’, who is called the most disturbing women in <The Season in the star Light>, and due to the ethical boundaries of the national reconstruction period and the sexual transfer of the U.S. military, Yanggongju becomes an ‘unspeakable subject’ in her situation. Yanggongju, who experienced objectification in front of the exclusivity of no one to listen to their circumstances, is voluntarily or forcibly silent, but also mocks the look of the colonial subject through a ‘gaze’, ‘cold look’. The latter of the female subaltern shows a ‘colonization of consciousness’ that accepts ‘American things’ and ‘American economic resources’ as rescuers to solve economic difficulties at <Q Hotel>. Although the fantasy of post-poverty seems to be realized through unconditional fantasy and longing, the reality that the future and happiness were eventually destroyed by the ‘American thing,’ the object of worship, is revealed to have not been the savior using the irony technique. This also suggests the ambivalence of the US aid economy. As such, Han Mal-sook sees the post-war as a situation of oppression that no one listens to and tries to hear the voices of subalterns, and reveals the violence and irrationality of colonial discourse through the image of female subalterns who undergo multi-layered colonization by empires, states, and men. By examining women's reactions and reflections on various power acts of the time, this paper confirmed that Han Mal-sook has been sensitive to exploration and diagnosis with great interest in society and reality, and provides serious and multi- layered knowledge of women and society, women and the times.
