This study uses various discourses produced by the Chinese intellectual community during the acceptance of Western detective stories from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China era, to analyze their perspectives on detective stories, the contemporary, ideological contexts, and the relationship of detective stories as a genre. With the popularity of translation of detective stories which began in the late 19th century, Chinese intellectuals began to recognize detective stories as a genre of fiction. Before and after the 5.4 Movement, detective stories were one of the most notable genres of fiction in the Chinese intellectual society, until they were classified and criticized by many literary artists. At this time, modern Chinese intellectuals recognized that Western detective stories could be an important medium for enhancing the spiritual awakening of the people, or the value of ‘enlightenment,’ which was the talk of the time. Based on why Chinese intellectuals were excluded and suppressed before and after the 5.4 Movement, the study examined how the discourse on detective stories was formed and contained in China, and how it was suppressed.
