Promoting motor skills in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is crucial because motor skills are associated with other fundamental development in children with ASD such as language skills, executive function, and adaptive behaviors. However, children with ASD experience motor skill deficits from early childhood. Even though, physical activity has been considered a factor for promoting motor skills in children without ASD, it is still unclear how physical activity is associated with motor skills in young children with ASD. The purpose of the current study was to examine the association between physical activity and motor skills in young children with ASD. Sixty-eight parents of children with ASD participated in the current study. They were recruited through various disability-related organizations and communities. Motor skills and physical activity behaviors in young children with ASD were evaluated by parent-proxy questionnaires. Results of the regression revealed that the regression model significantly explained 12% of variance in coordination during movement in young children with ASD (p=0.04). Physical activity behaviors were a significant predictor for coordination during movement after controlling for child’s age and parental income (β=1.65, p=0.009). Interventionists should consider providing physical activity opportunities to young children with ASD to promote motor skills, especially coordination during movement, in young children with ASD.
