This essay, aims to show how Eliot tries to define the meaning of the metaphysical in the Clark Lectures, which had taken place from January to March of 1926. In these lectures, Eliot formulates the ideas on those poets of the seventeenth century that are commonly called by the name of Metaphysical poets. He raises the questions on the original definition of that term (given by John Dryden and adopted by Samuel Johnson) and defines “metaphysical” period as the period in which abstract thoughts, which usually inhabit the realm of thought, is incorporated into that of poetry. With that definition in mind, Eliot sees three periods as “metaphysical”: fourteenth century Italy (represented by Dante and his circle) seventeenth century England (represented by Donne, among many others) and nineteenth century France (represented by Laforgue and Corbiere). In the subsequent lectures, Eliot views Dante as the poet who could combine feeling and intellect, and Donne as the one who represents the division between the two.
