This study aims at examining how John Donne (1572∼1631), one of the 17th century British metaphysical poets, influenced the development of modern English and American poetry in the 20th century. This study is also intended for investigating how he influenced the poems of Joseph Brodsky (1940∼1996), the Jewish American exile poet from USSR. It is a well-known fact that Donne has a great influence on English and American poetry in the 20th century. On the basis of T. S. Eliot’s criticism and opinion, this study will look at how Donne influenced the 20th century modern English and American poets and then compare the poetry of Donne with that of Brodsky. By looking at the similarities between the two poets, this study will create a space where we can see how Donne influenced Brodsky’s poems. Although there is an interval of about 360 years in time, it is very meaningful to examine the extent of Donne’s influence on Brodsky.
