In today’s fashion system where a vast volume of textile waste is thrown away every year, having many problems in a fast-paced circulation, there is a need for a paradigm shift towards the direction of non-occurrence of textile waste from the beginning for the purpose of realizing sustainable fashion. In this context, this study has significance in finding a way which makes it possible for fashion companies and designers to stretch the application of the principle of zero waste fashion as one of the design methods proposed as solutions to textile waste by thoroughly analyzing it. This study looked into the concept and value of zero waste fashion, and analyzed the types of zero waste fashion, and set the puzzle cutting technique as a research subject; here, the puzzle cutting technique is one of the cut&sew techniques which are similar to garment making method of the present fashion industry. This study looked into the types of puzzle cutting technique by dividing them into self-completion, multi-fabric, and embedded according to the number of patterns and fabric used in completing a rectangular puzzle cutting pattern as a unit, and analyzed individual empirical cases. The characteristics of the puzzle cutting pattern aspect deducted on the basis of the above process are summarized as flexibility, simultaneity, connectivity, and contingency. Hereupon, in design study, as a case of a life-size production of the actually commercialized design through the application of these characteristics, this study shows a specific possibility of realization. It is intended to hope that there might be continuous researches and cases aiming to develop the puzzle cutting technique for the time to come, and there might be studies on methods that make it possible to reduce time and trouble by integrating the puzzle cutting technique with technologies.
