While North Korea’s increasing asymmetric capabilities have impelled both South Korea and Japan to seek arms build-up in their conventional means to detect, defend, and/or ‘hit-to-kill’ incoming targets, South Korea and Japan have shown intriguing level of divergence in their armaments and enthusiasm in joining the US-led BMD in the region. Yet, as this study finds, existing studies on South Korea and Japan’s BMD have been, what this study calls, ‘interceptor-oriented.’ Although the literatures on the BMD address the role of sensors and radars in tandem, the analysis has been often limited to equipment that come in ‘set’ of interceptor missiles. Building upon the technical anatomy of the BMD and ISR and literatures on deterrence and defense, this study posits the BMD and ISR as composite means of active deterrence and defense.
